Dr Shannon is a distinguished surgeon with over thirty years of experience in the field of medicine. He graduated from the University of Sydney in 1987 and went on to train in general surgery at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Dr Shannon received his Fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1995.
Following his training, Dr Shannon spent a year as an associate lecturer in Surgery at the University of Sydney with a clinical appointment to the Sydney Melanoma Unit. He then completed a 12-month Fellowship in Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Hong Kong, followed by a two-year Fellowship in Head & Neck Oncology at the University of Tennessee, Memphis.
In mid-1999, Dr Shannon returned to Sydney and was appointed to the Department of Head & Neck Surgery of the Central Sydney Area Health Service while also rejoining the Sydney Melanoma Unit.
Dr Shannon specialises in Head & Neck Oncology and manages a range of cancers, including mucosal malignancies of the upper aerodigestive tract, melanoma, cutaneous malignancy, salivary gland diseases, and thyroid and parathyroid diseases. He is passionate about research, with interests including organ preservation protocols, the use of regional chemotherapy for advanced head and neck cancers, and sentinel node biopsy for melanoma of the head and neck.
Dr Shannon strongly believes in teaching and is dedicated to teaching at all levels of medical training. Patients can find Dr Shannon in two locations: 119-143 Missenden Road, Camperdown NSW 2050, and The Poche Centre, 40 Rocklands Road, Wollstonecraft NSW 2065.
