Prof Justin Gundara

Professor Justin Gundara is an accomplished sub-specialist endocrine surgeon, currently holding a Staff Specialist position with Metro South, QLD Health. He is also affiliated with the University of Queensland and Griffith University, where he supports clinical teaching, pragmatic surgical research, and professional development. He serves in various surgical training and governance leadership roles, representing the Australian and New Zealand Endocrine Surgeons sub-specialty body and Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Justin was the only Queensland clinician involved in publishing bi-national hyperparathyroidism guidelines and is the current clinical lead for development of similar thyroid cancer guidelines. He spearheaded the inaugural post-fellowship training program in Endocrine Surgery throughout Australia and New Zealand and maintains roles as the Chair of the ANZES Training Board and ANZES Training and Education Officer.

Justin obtained Honours Degrees in Applied Science and Medicine through the University of Sydney and completed his surgical training at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney. He completed a PhD with the Sydney University Endocrine Surgical Unit, where he researched neuroendocrine disease. He then obtained fellowships in the HPB Surgery at Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney and endocrine surgery at University College London Hospital, United Kingdom.

He further expanded his clinical knowledge in paediatric endocrine surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London and attended the European Neuroendocrine Tumour Summer School at the Royal Free Hospital. Justin also underwent advanced training in minimally invasive and robotic endocrine surgery at IRCAD Strasbourg, France. He has published over 100 basic scientific and clinical research papers, has presented at numerous local, national and international forums and maintains an active research brief.

Professor Gundara’s holistic training in the endocrine surgical discipline spans the breadth of thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and pancreatic diseases. State of the art training in surgical techniques (including the robotic platform) ensures that Professor Gundara is equipped to deal with all endocrine pathologies with the most appropriate surgical approach tailored to both the patient and disease.
