Dr John Tan

Dr John Tan is an experienced interventional cardiologist based in Murdoch, Perth. He specialises in the management of structural heart disease, particularly heart valve disease. With his expertise in the field, he focuses on the management of ischemic heart disease and complex coronary artery disease. Dr Tan has extensive experience in performing coronary angiography and coronary angioplasty with stenting, using the trans-radial (wrist) approach.

Dr Tan obtained his Honours degree from the University of Western Australia in 2004. He completed his initial physician training at Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital and subsequently pursued advanced cardiology training at Fremantle Hospital. In 2012, he attained his fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

To further his knowledge and skills, Dr Tan undertook a two-year clinical fellowship in interventional cardiology at the Centre for Heart Valve Innovation, St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver. During this time, he had the privilege of training under the mentorship of Dr John Webb, a renowned pioneer and world expert in transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). As an accredited TAVI operator, Dr Tan played a critical role in the development of Western Australia's first private hospital TAVI program at Mount Hospital, where he is an essential member of the TAVI team.

Dr Tan has achieved exceptional outcomes in TAVI procedures and actively shares his expertise by teaching other cardiologists how to perform this advanced procedure. His passion for treating structural heart disease is reflected in his numerous published articles and presentations at international conferences. Dr Tan's expertise extends to minimally invasive percutaneous treatments for valvular heart disease, including transcatheter valve replacements, balloon valvuloplasties, as well as percutaneous closure of patent foramen ovales, atrial septal defects, and left atrial appendages.
