Dr Hema Karthik

Dr. Hema Karthik is a highly skilled and experienced ophthalmologist with over 18 years of professional practice in the field of ophthalmology. She specialises in Cataract Surgery, Medical Retina, Oculoplastics, and Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS). In 2013, Dr. Karthik became a fellow of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (FRANZCO), a testament to her expertise and dedication to the field.

Dr. Karthik obtained her medical education, graduating with an MBBS from the prestigious Madras Medical College, Chennai, India, in 2001. She later pursued specialist ophthalmology training, earning a Master of Surgery, M.S. Ophthal, in 2005 from the reputed Regional Institute of Ophthalmology and Government Ophthalmic Hospital (RIO GOH), also in Chennai, India.

In 2006, Dr. Karthik relocated to Australia, where she settled in Darwin and has since been providing exceptional ophthalmic care to patients in the region. In 2016, Dr. Karthik completed her fellowship in Medical Retina and Oculoplastics through The Mater Health Services and Queensland Eye Institute in Brisbane. She also obtained certification in MIGS, specifically iStent implantation.

As a consultant staff specialist at Royal Darwin Hospital, Top End Health Service, Dr. Hema Karthik is always at hand to provide quality ophthalmic care. She is also part of the Outreach program that provides ophthalmic care services to remote communities in Katherine and Gove.

Dr. Karthik's passion for teaching and mentoring is exceptional, as she is actively involved in medical student teaching activities and also serves as a term supervisor for ophthalmology trainees rostered through the NSW Vocational Training Program of RANZCO.

Dr. Karthik currently performs surgeries such as cataract, pterygium, MIGS, and oculoplastic surgery at Darwin Private Hospital. Her excellence in her profession, coupled with her dedication to the field, has earned her the respect and admiration of colleagues and patients alike.
