Associate Professor David Platts is an exceptionally skilled Cardiologist with extensive experience in the field. Dr Platts obtained his Bachelor of Medical Science (B Med Sci) from the University of Tasmania in Hobart, followed by a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the same institution. He then went on to complete his training in cardiology in Hobart and Sydney, Australia. Dr Platts furthered his expertise in echocardiography by completing a two-year fellowship at King's College Hospital in London, England, where he also earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) for his research in contrast-specific echocardiographic imaging in coronary artery disease.

With his extensive qualifications, Dr Platts is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP), the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (FCSANZ), the American Society of Echocardiography (FASE), and the European Society of Cardiology (FESC). He is renowned for his expertise in non-invasive imaging of the heart using ultrasound, specifically in echocardiography, including contrast echocardiography, stress echocardiography, and trans-oesophageal echocardiography.

Dr Platts' clinical interests focus on various aspects of cardiology, including breathlessness, heart failure, valve problems, peri-operative management of cardiac problems, and medical diseases affecting the heart. His expertise in non-invasive imaging allows him to provide accurate diagnoses and treatment plans for his patients.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr Platts also actively engages in research. He has completed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Queensland, with a focus on the application of perflutren microsphere contrast echocardiography and its feasibility and interaction with mechanical cardiac support devices. His research interests also extend to contrast-enhanced echocardiography and imaging of percutaneous short-term and durable long-term mechanical cardiac support devices.
