Dr David Dewar

Dr. David Dewar is a distinguished orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip, knee, and complex trauma surgeries. He is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian Orthopaedic Association, and he has received extensive sub-specialty fellowship training in international settings.

Dr. Dewar completed his undergraduate medical science degree and postgraduate medical degree with honors from the University of Sydney before moving to Newcastle in 2004. He spent nine years working throughout the Hunter region, where he completed his basic and advanced orthopaedic training. In 2013, he was awarded his fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian Orthopaedic Association. He then pursued further specialization through two additional subspecialty fellowships.

The first fellowship took place at Prince of Wales Hospital and Sydney Children’s Hospital, where Dr. Dewar worked alongside renowned orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Michael Solomon to refine his skills in hip and knee surgery as well as hip preservation surgery. Following this, he was granted a prestigious orthopaedic fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, consistently ranked as the leading hospital for orthopaedic surgery in North America. During his one-year fellowship, Dr. Dewar trained under esteemed orthopaedic surgeon Dr. David Helfet, developing expertise in complex pelvic and acetabular trauma, upper and lower limb trauma, and fracture non-union surgery.

In addition to his surgical work, Dr. Dewar is actively involved in research. He has presented his work at national and international meetings and has earned a PhD from the University of Newcastle. Dr. Dewar currently serves as an appointed surgeon at the John Hunter Hospital and the Lake Macquarie Private Hospital, where he continues to provide exceptional care to his patients.
