Dr Bernard Chin

Dr Bernard Chin is a highly skilled and experienced General Gastroenterologist, specialising in bowel cancer screening and prevention. He obtained his medical training at the University of Adelaide in 1999 and became a Fellow of the Australian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 2007. During his advanced training in Gastroenterology, he focused on advanced techniques such as Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS), Double Balloon Enteroscopy (DBE), and Wireless Capsule Endoscopy (WCE) at renowned hospitals in Sydney.

In 2007, Dr Chin established Cairns Gastroenterology in Far North Queensland (FNQ), the only private gastroenterology practice in the region. His practice aims to deliver exceptional and accessible gastroenterological services to the local community. Dr Chin's dedication to rural and regional medicine led him to also work part-time as a specialist at Cairns Base Hospital, providing care to acutely ill rural and indigenous patients. Through his commitment to teaching, he has mentored first-year Gastroenterology Advanced Trainees who have returned to FNQ to work as gastroenterologists in both the public and private sectors.

Dr Chin serves as an official spokesperson for Bowel Cancer Australia, actively promoting awareness of bowel cancer and advocating for early detection and prevention. Additionally, he is known for pioneering the treatment of Abdominal Cutaneous Nerve Entrapment Syndrome (ACNES), the most common cause of non-surgical abdominal wall pain.

Cairns Gastroenterology offers access to tertiary levels of gastrointestinal services, including EUS, ERCP, oesophageal manometry and pH, and wireless capsule endoscopy. Dr Chin collaborates with other gastroenterologists within the practice who specialise in different areas of gastroenterology. The practice also provides private outreach endoscopy services in Innisfail and the Tablelands, as well as telehealth consultations for rural patients. Dr Chin operates at both Cairns Private Hospital and Cairns Day Surgery, ensuring comprehensive care for his patients.
