Dr Asanga Abeyaratne

Meet Dr Asanga Abeyaratne, a specialist physician who is dedicated to providing healthcare services to rural, remote aboriginal communities in Australia's Northern Territory. Currently, he works at the Royal Darwin Hospital and Darwin Private Hospital where he offers his expertise in nephrology to patients with various kidney-related disorders. Dr Abeyaratne is renowned for providing excellent outpatient services and establishing the NT Kidney Clinic, in collaboration with Darwin Urology, to help address the shortage of healthcare services in the Darwin area.

Dr Abeyaratne's career started at the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka, where he completed his undergraduate medical training in 2003. He then moved to the United Kingdom to undertake his basic physician training and membership exam. In 2007, he migrated to Australia and spent several years working in the Royal Hobart Hospital before completing his specialist training in nephrology in South Australia.

Dr Abeyaratne is also passionate about education, and he is a senior lecturer at Flinders University's NT Medical Program. Additionally, he is an examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians Exams. He has also recently been appointed as the clinical lead for the Territory Kidney Care (TKC) project, which is supported by the Menzies School of Health Research.
