Professor Justin Gundara is an accomplished sub-specialist endocrine surgeon, currently holding a Staff Specialist position with Metro South, QLD Health. With affiliations to the University of Queensland and Griffith University, he supports clinical teaching, pragmatic surgical research, and professional development. He also holds various leadership roles in surgical training and governance, including the Australian and New Zealand Endocrine Surgeons sub-specialty body and RACS. Justin has been instrumental in publishing bi-national hyperparathyroidism guidelines and establishing the inaugural post-fellowship training program in Endocrine Surgery across Australia and New Zealand.
Justin completed his surgical training at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, after obtaining Honours Degrees in Applied Science and Medicine. He pursued doctoral studies at the renowned Sydney University Endocrine Surgical Unit, focusing on neuroendocrine disease. Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons followed, along with fellowship training in HPB surgery with ANZHPBA. He also completed an endocrine surgery fellowship in the UK, becoming a Senior Clinical Fellow in Endocrine Surgery at University College London Hospital. Even further clinical knowledge was gained at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London, focusing on paediatric endocrine surgery. Justin attended the European Neuroendocrine Tumour Summer School at the Royal Free Hospital and underwent advanced training in minimally invasive and robotic endocrine surgery at IRCAD Strasbourg, France.
With his extensive training and experience, Professor Gundara is well-equipped to manage a wide range of endocrine surgical conditions, including those affecting the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and pancreas. Utilizing state-of-the-art surgical techniques, such as the robotic platform, Justin can tailor the most suitable surgical approach for each patient and disease.
