Dr Tam holds a joint appointment as a Staff Specialist in cardiac and thoracic surgery at the Prince Charles Hospital. He played a crucial role as a lead surgeon in Australasia's first successful heart lung liver transplant. Additionally, he has made notable contributions to the field through his research on heart valve replacement using the mini sternotomy technique, which he has published extensively on.
In 1996, Dr Tam established the Cardiothoracic unit at Ramsay's Greenslopes Private Hospital and served as its Director until 2008.
