Associate Professor Spiros Fourlanos, a graduate of the University of Melbourne, is the Director of the Royal Melbourne Hospital Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology. His PhD thesis on ‘Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA): New Clinical, Immunogenetic and Metabolic Perspectives’ was completed at the Walter & Eliza Hall Institute, under the supervision of Professors Len Harrison and Peter Colman. Together with Professor Peter Colman, he created the innovative BioGrid Diabetes Database, now being used by multiple institutes in Australia for clinical care and benchmarking. He designed and oversaw the RAPIDS trial, the largest cluster randomized clinical trial to test a diabetes intervention in non-critical care, with Dr Mervyn Kyi. Recently, A/Prof Fourlanos supervised the Royal Melbourne Hospital in becoming the first Australian hospital to implement a comprehensive automated networked blood glucose monitoring system. His clinical research covers various interests including managing diabetes, adult-onset autoimmune diabetes, medical device technologies for diabetes, and obesity. He serves as honorary treasurer of the Australian Diabetes Society Council.
