Dr Shyamalar Gunatheesan

Dr Shyamalar Gunatheesan is a highly educated and passionate dermatologist specialising in dermatology. She currently practices in Fitzroy, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Dr Gunatheesan holds several qualifications, including MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery) and BMedSci (Bachelor of Medical Science). She is a Fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatologists (FACD).

Dr Gunatheesan's dermatology training took place across various prestigious medical centers, including The Royal Melbourne Hospital, Skin and Cancer Foundation, Box Hill Hospital, and Western Hospital in Melbourne. She also spent two years of her training at St George's Hospital in London. As a Consultant dermatologist, she works at the Skin Health Institute, a tertiary referral dermatology center, where she specialises in Psoriasis and Nail Clinics.

With a passion for research, Dr Gunatheesan has authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals. Her contributions to the medical field have been recognized and awarded. In 2012, she received the Adrian Johnson Memorial Prize for her publication in the Australasian Journal of Dermatology. She was also honored with the F.C Florence Bequest from the College of Dermatologists, allowing her to pursue her Fellowship at Columbia University and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York City. This experience has enhanced her expertise in the early detection of melanoma, management of metastatic melanoma, and the dermatological side effects of oncology treatments.

As a leading educator in her field, Dr Gunatheesan plays an active role in supervising dermatology registrars and serves as an examiner for the Australasian College of Dermatology Final Year exams. She is committed to sharing her knowledge and expertise to advance the field of dermatology. Recently, she was awarded a NHMRC grant to conduct research on genes involved in wound healing and neural tube closure.

Dr Gunatheesan's primary interests lie in hair conditions, including alopecia areata, female hair loss, and male pattern baldness.
