Mr. Shane Barwood is an expert Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in shoulder reconstructive and joint replacement surgery. Based in Melbourne, Australia, Shane focuses on arthroscopic techniques for shoulder tendon and stabilization surgery, as well as modern shoulder replacement surgery.
Shane completed his medical undergraduate training at the University of Melbourne and went on to complete his residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital. He conducted a research fellowship at the Royal Children's Hospital, studying orthopaedic surgical aspects of neuromuscular diseases. He completed his orthopaedic training in Victoria in 2003 and obtained a fellowship of the Australasian College of Surgeons.
To further enhance his skills in shoulder surgery, Shane pursued two sub-specialty fellowships. He completed a shoulder replacement fellowship at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital of Columbia University and another fellowship at the Sports Medicine Department of the University of Calgary, focusing on arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder.
In addition to his practice at the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group, Shane serves as a consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Moorabbin Public Hospital. He has participated in research projects, published several research papers, and presented his findings nationally and internationally.
With a strong interest in treating sporting injuries, Shane works with AFL teams and other elite athletic groups in the management of shoulder injuries. He has also been awarded the prestigious European traveling fellowship by the Shoulder and Elbow Society of Australia.
