Dr Sara Hungerford

Dr Sara Hungerford is a consultant physician and cardiologist specialising in structural heart disease assessment, cardiac imaging, heart disease in women, and sports cardiology. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and a registered medical practitioner with the General Medical Council in the United Kingdom.

Dr Hungerford obtained her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of New South Wales in 2009. She is currently pursuing her PhD at the University of New South Wales, supported by a prestigious Royal Australian College of Physicians Scholarship, an Australian Government Research Training program grant, and a St Vincent’s Clinic travelling fellowship.

Dr Hungerford completed her cardiology training at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney. She has a strong academic focus and holds an appointment as a Conjoint Associate Lecturer at the University of New South Wales, where she regularly teaches medical students.

As a Fulbright scholar, Dr Hungerford's research focuses on understanding and predicting the hemodynamic responses to transcatheter mitral and aortic valve implantation using non-invasive techniques such as two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography, arterial tonometry, and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. She has collaborated with the Royal Brompton Hospital in London and has received numerous research grants. Her work has resulted in several publications and has been presented at national and international conferences, including the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand Annual Scientific Conference, Structural Heart Disease Australia, and the American Heart Association Annual Scientific Conference.

In addition to her research, Dr Hungerford has expertise in advanced cardiac imaging techniques, including transthoracic echocardiography, stress echocardiography, transoesophageal echocardiography, and novel cardiac MRI techniques. Her specialization lies in structural heart disease of the aortic and mitral valve.

Outside of her medical career, Dr Hungerford has also excelled as a professional first-class cricketer. She has represented various teams, including the Sydney Sixers, ACT Meteors, Surrey cricket club, the Auckland Hearts, and the NSW Breakers.
