Dr Ralph Gunkelman is an Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialty in hip, knee, hand, paediatric, and trauma-fracture surgeries. He obtained his BA in Molecular Biology / Biochemistry from Middlebury College in the United States in 1998. After working in healthcare investment banking, he decided to pursue a surgical career and completed his medical training at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2007.
Dr Gunkelman migrated to Sydney in 2009 and gained experience as an unaccredited registrar in Neurosurgery and Orthopaedics. He became an Australian citizen in 2013 and was selected for higher surgical training in Orthopaedics by the Australian Orthopaedic Association. In 2019, he was awarded Fellowships by the Royal Australasian College of Surgery and the Australian Orthopaedic Association. He also completed a Fellowship in Adult Lower Limb Arthroplasty and Reconstructive Surgery with Orthocentre.
With a focus on joint preservation and lower limb arthroplasty, Dr Gunkelman is skilled in computer-navigated and robotic-assisted total hip and total and partial knee arthroplasty. He has a special interest in managing adult, paediatric, and hand trauma, as well as process improvement and data analysis for auditing trauma workflow and outcome measures.
Dr Gunkelman resides in Austinmer with his wife and four children. His consultations are available at his Thirroul rooms in New South Wales.
