A/Prof Paul Calafiore

Associate Professor Paul Calafiore is a highly respected Cardiologist based in Heidelberg, Melbourne, Australia. With a special focus on Echocardiography, he has made significant contributions to the field and is recognized for his expertise in valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathies, pericardial disease, and adult congenital heart disease.

A/Prof Calafiore completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the prestigious University of Melbourne in 1976. He subsequently trained at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne before embarking on an Advanced Cardiology Fellowship in Echocardiography at the renowned Cleveland Clinic Foundation in the United States.

Upon his return to Australia, A/Prof Calafiore was appointed as a Staff Specialist at The Austin Hospital, where he introduced transoesophageal echocardiography to Victoria. He also played a vital role in introducing intraoperative echocardiography, which revolutionized minimally invasive Mitral Valve repair surgeries at the Austin Hospital.

As the Director of Echocardiography at Austin Health and later at Epworth Richmond, A/Prof Calafiore introduced several groundbreaking techniques, including exercise and pharmacological stress echocardiography, as well as 3D transoesophageal echocardiography. These advancements have significantly enhanced diagnostic and treatment options for patients.

In addition to his clinical work, A/Prof Calafiore is dedicated to sharing his knowledge and expertise. He is actively involved in teaching medical students, cardiology trainees, and trainee cardiac sonographers. He also participates in interventional cardiology programs, such as transcatheter aortic valve implantation and minimally invasive procedures like MitraClip, percutaneous Left Atrial Appendage occlusion, and Atrial Septal Defect closure.

A/Prof Calafiore holds several prestigious qualifications, including Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, and the American Society of Echocardiography. He is a valued member of the medical community and continues to contribute to the advancement of cardiac care through his clinical work, research, and teaching endeavors.
