Professor Robert Whitbourn is a highly accomplished Interventional Cardiologist with over 20 years of experience in cardiac medicine and surgery. Currently serving as the Director of Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories and Director of Ambulatory Services at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, he also performs diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures at Albury Wodonga Private Hospital in collaboration with Dr Kugan Nadarasa.
Professor Whitbourn's contributions to the field of Cardiology have been widely recognized both domestically and internationally. He is a Fellow of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, and has emerged as a thought leader in innovative methods for treating heart disease and pioneering novel devices.
Having completed two years of research and clinical experience as an Interventional Cardiology and Research Fellow at Stanford University Medical Centre in the US, Professor Whitbourn became the principal investigator of multiple research projects in the field of cardiovascular technology. He played a significant role in the development of several "first-in-man" devices, including novel coronary bifurcated, drug eluting, and bioabsorbable stents.
Professor Whitbourn's most recent breakthrough has been in the area of renal sympathetic denervation for resistant systemic hypertension. His pioneering work has opened up innovative avenues for treating hypertension and has significantly improved the condition and lives of countless patients.
