Dr Leon Cohen

Dr Leon Cohen is a highly skilled surgeon with extensive experience in Laparoscopic and Bariatric surgery. He received advanced training in these specialties in Perth and the UK. In fact, he was one of the pioneers who introduced the Sleeve Gastrectomy procedure to Australia. With a track record of over 1500 lap sleeve gastrectomies, he has one of the most significant individual series in the country. This has not only made him a valuable contributor to research and teaching in Australia but also internationally. 

Dr Cohen has a particular interest in revisional bariatric surgery, along with gastrointestinal surgery and endoscopy. He is passionate about ensuring that patients get the most appropriate and effective treatment. Under his leadership, Mercy Bariatrics has transformed into a truly multidisciplinary practice. He takes pride in the fact that for him and his team, success in bariatrics is not just about the procedure. They take a holistic approach and celebrate improvement in overall health and wellbeing.

Dr Cohen has a life outside of medicine. He is an avid Jazz music enthusiast and plays Tenor Saxophone. He also enjoys sailing, bushwalking and spending time with his family. He is married to Caroline and has two sons.
