Dr Ruth Blackham

Dr. Blackham is a distinguished Consultant Bariatric & General Surgeon, Academic, and Director of Aurora Bariatrics. She has garnered numerous awards for her excellent work, including the prestigious John Corboy Medal, the highest award for a Surgical Trainee from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. She is also the only surgeon to have won both the AMA WA Junior Doctor of the Year and the John Corboy Medal. She trained in bariatric surgery in Perth and Melbourne and holds the IFSO Asia Pacific Medtronic scholarship and the ANZGOSA-Upper GI Younger Fellow scholarship.

Dr. Blackham has extensive academic and teaching experience, having completed two Masters degrees in Surgery and Legal Medicine. She is currently a PhD Candidate researching quality and excellence within the discipline of bariatric surgery through The University of Western Australia. For six years, she was an Academic within the Discipline of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, teaching trainee doctors and medical students, post-graduate surgical registrars and fellows. She is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of SOARD and a reviewer for the Australian/New Zealand Journal of Surgery.

Furthermore, Dr. Blackham is a lifetime advocate for junior doctors within the Australian Medical Association and Postgraduate Medical Council of Western Australia. She is a council-appointed member of both the Prevocational Skills & Education Committee and the Skills & Oversight Committee of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Dr. Blackham was also awarded a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellowship, which granted her further access to international surgical immersions in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Singapore, London, and Vienna.

Dr. Blackham's passion for bariatric surgery and commitment to excellence has made her an esteemed figure in her field of practice. Her contribution to teaching and training aspiring surgeons is invaluable, and her advocacy for junior doctors and their wellbeing is commendable.
