Dr Karl Poon

Dr Karl Poon is a highly accomplished consultant interventional cardiologist specialising in structural heart disease interventions. He has extensive experience in procedures such as transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), MitraClip, as well as atrial septal defect (ASD)/patent foramen ovale (PFO)/patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) closure.

Dr Poon completed his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree at the University of Melbourne in 2001. He then underwent training at the prestigious Royal Melbourne Hospital and St Vincent's Hospital before pursuing a two-year interventional cardiology fellowship at The Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane.

In 2012, Dr Poon further honed his skills as a senior interventional fellow at William Beaumont Hospital in Michigan, USA. During his time there, he gained extensive exposure to complex structural interventions in TAVI, MitraClip, and left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO). Since his return to Australia in 2013, Dr Poon has been serving as a senior staff specialist at The Prince Charles Hospital. He is widely recognized as one of the most experienced TAVI implanters in Australia and has been instrumental in setting up new TAVI programs in various centers across Australasia.

Apart from his clinical work, Dr Poon is deeply committed to ongoing research and education. He currently holds a senior lecturer position at the University of Queensland and collaborates closely with the Queensland Heart Institute. Additionally, he serves as the primary investigator for several international TAVI/Sentinel studies conducted at his site.

Dr Poon's exceptional achievements and expertise have earned him invitations to chair and participate as a faculty member at numerous national and international cardiology meetings, including LondonValves, TokyoValves, ChinaValves, EuroPCR, and the American College of Cardiology (ACC) conferences.

Dr Poon consults on and admits patients at Greenslopes Private Hospital, where he provides expert interventions and delivers exceptional care. His vast experience in interventional cardiology, combined with his dedication to ongoing research, has resulted in significant advancements in the field. He serves as an inspiration to fellow cardiologists and continues to support the establishment of new interventional cardiology programs worldwide.
