Dr John Jorgensen's profile

Dr John Jorgensen is an accomplished upper GI and bariatric surgeon hailing from Australia. He currently serves as the Director of Bariatric Surgical Services at St George Private Hospital. This hospital specialises in bariatric procedures and is known as the highest volume bariatric hospital in Australia, regardless of being public or private. He completed his MBBS with honours from The University of New South Wales and later obtained his FRACS in 1991. Dr Jorgensen pursued a Master of Surgery in Laparoscopic Surgery after becoming an FRACS.

Dr Jorgensen completed his further training at The Royal Infirmary Glasgow, Scotland in the Pancreatic and Biliary Surgical Unit and at the Hepatopancreatic Biliary Unit of Lund University Hospital. As part of his training, he also trained in bariatric (weight loss) surgery. Upon his return to Australia, Dr Jorgensen founded a multi-disciplinary weight loss surgical center where he introduced the first laparoscopic (key-hole) gastric sleeve resections and laparoscopic gastric by-passes to Australia. This was a significant contribution to the Australian health industry that provided many bariatric surgeons with new techniques to learn.

Dr Jorgensen and his team have taught and mentored many Australian bariatric surgeons in these techniques. His exceptional work with St George Private Hospital has been recognized by the Surgical Review Corporation, accrediting them as the first Centre for Obesity Surgery Excellence in Australia. Dr Jorgensen has also been recognized as a Master Surgeon by the SRC, acknowledging his excellence in individual practice. This accreditation means that patient care, from pre-operation to post-operation, reflects the current best practices. As the head of the bariatric stream, Dr. Jorgensen chairs quarterly assurance meetings to ensure that the high standards remain consistent.

Apart from his numerous contributions to the field of surgery, Dr Jorgensen is also the author of several publications and articles in the field of bariatrics, including his latest article in Diabetic Living Magazine. Dr Jorgensen welcomes all patients at St George Private Hospital.
