Dr Nicholas Cunio

Dr Nicholas Cunio is an experienced cardiologist specialising in general clinical adult cardiology, non-invasive evaluation, and Echocardiography, including Stress Echocardiography. He is based in Miranda, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Dr Cunio has been associated with St George Private Hospital and Kareena Private Hospital in Sydney since 1996 and 1999, respectively.

Dr Cunio's passion for cardiology and Echocardiography began during his training at St George Hospital. He had the privilege of working alongside Prof Harry Rakowski, a renowned pioneer in Echocardiography, at Toronto General Hospital in Canada. Dr Cunio played an important role in establishing Transesophageal Echocardiography at St George Public Hospital in the 1980s. He conducted numerous studies as part of his clinical research, performing the first 1000 studies using this technique. Furthermore, he was instrumental in introducing Stress Echocardiograms to the hospital using early technology. His contributions to the field were recognized when he received the Young Investigators Award at the St George Hospital Centenary Symposium in 1994.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr Cunio has held several leadership roles. He currently serves as a VMO Cardiology at St George Private Hospital and Kareena Private Hospital. He has been the Chair of the Body Corporate of SGP Training since 1996. Previously, from 2004 to 2017, he served as the Chair of the Department of Cardiac Services and was a Member of the Medical Advisory Committee at St George Private Hospital.

Dr Cunio's comprehensive medical training includes an internship and RMO at RPAH in Sydney, with rotations at Dubbo & Orange Base Hospitals from 1984 to 1986. He then pursued further training as a Medical Registrar in Basic Physician Training at POW/PHH in Sydney from 1987 to 1989. Continuing his specialization, he completed his Advanced Cardiology Training at St George Hospital in Sydney from 1990 to 1993. In 1995, Dr Cunio undertook a Clinical Fellowship at the Department of Cardiology at Toronto General Hospital in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
