Prof Gregory Scalia is a highly accomplished cardiologist based in Urraween, Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia. Prof Scalia obtained his MBBS degree with Honors from the University of Queensland in 1987, where he was awarded a Gold Medal. He further pursued his passion for echocardiography by completing a two-year cardiac imaging fellowship at the renowned Cleveland Clinic in the United States in 1996. His exceptional expertise and contributions in the field have earned him fellowships in the American College of Cardiology and the American Society of Echocardiography.

As an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Queensland since 2004, Prof Scalia has made significant contributions to both academia and clinical practice. In recognition of his research excellence in cardiac diastolic function, he was awarded a Master of Medical Science degree by the University of Queensland in 1999.

Currently, Prof Scalia serves as the Director of Echocardiography at The Prince Charles Hospital. He also holds appointments as a visiting consultant at the Wesley Hospital and regularly travels to Hervey Bay to provide essential cardiac care to his patients.

Prof Scalia's dedication to advancing medical knowledge is evident in his extensive publication record. With over three hundred papers, abstracts, and book chapters in peer-reviewed major journals, he has made a lasting impact on the cardiovascular field. His research covers various topics, including cardiac amyloidosis, aortic measurements, echocardiographic parameters, and the role of imaging in transcatheter aortic valve implantation.

In addition to his academic and research pursuits, Prof Scalia is committed to sharing his expertise through lecturing and teaching. His exceptional teaching abilities have been recognized through his co-direction of the Echo Australia program since its establishment in 2002. With a national reputation as an expert in echocardiography, he actively contributes to medical education programs in Australia, the United States, and South East Asia.

Prof Scalia's clinical interests lie predominantly in non-invasive cardiac imaging and invasive cardiac imaging, particularly transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE). He has a particular interest in valvular heart disease and offers consultation and testing services to patients at the Wesley Hospital and during his visits to Hervey Bay.

Prof Scalia's contributions to the field of cardiology have been acknowledged through various awards and honours. Some notable accolades include the Fitzgerald, Bashford, and Scalia's research on the regression of the anatomic cardiac features of cardiac amyloidosis, which was published in CASE journal in 2017. His groundbreaking work on cardiac amyloidosis following stem cell transplantation was recognized in the IJC Heart & Vasculature journal in the same year. Furthermore, his innovative research on the echocardiographic pulmonary to left atrial ratio (ePLAR) as a non-invasive parameter to differentiate pre-capillary and post-capillary pulmonary hypertension has gained widespread attention.
