Dr Catriona Downie

Dr Downie is a consultant ophthalmologist with subspecialty training in oculoplastic and lacrimal surgery, ocular oncology, and cataract surgery. She graduated in Medicine from the University of Newcastle with Distinction and completed a Master's Degree in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Sydney. Dr. Downie received her ophthalmology training at the Sydney Eye Hospital, where she served as the Professorial Senior Registrar. She also held the position of Senior Registrar at Liverpool and Royal Prince Alfred Hospitals, acquiring extensive experience in managing complex medical and surgical eye conditions.

Dr Downie further honed her expertise through a Fellowship in Oculoplastic, Lacrimal, and Cataract surgery at St Thomas’ Hospital in London. During this time, she gained valuable experience in Mohs surgery reconstruction of periocular skin cancers in collaboration with the St John’s Dermatology unit at Guy’s Hospital, London. She then completed a Fellowship in Ocular Oncology at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, a leading centre for ocular oncology in Europe. Here, Dr. Downie developed her skills in managing ocular surface cancers and intraocular tumours, including melanoma, naevi, vascular tumours, and retinoblastomas.

A Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO), Dr. Downie has contributed to the peer-reviewed medical literature and presented at national and international conferences. She is dedicated to teaching and research, actively participating in the registrar training program at the Sydney Eye Hospital. Dr Downie prioritises clinical and surgical excellence, ensuring the involvement of patients and their families in the decision-making process during their treatment.

Dr Downie's special interests include eyelid surgery, ptosis, ectropion and entropion correction, excision and reconstruction of eyelid lesions, Mohs reconstruction, blepharoplasty, lacrimal surgery, cataract surgery, management of ocular surface tumours, conjunctival cancers including melanoma, sutureless pterygium surgery, and the management of both malignant and non-malignant intraocular tumours. She offers a consultation discount to pensioners and provides “known gap” surgery for her patients.
