Townsville is a city in Queensland, Australia, with many governmental, community, and big corporate administrative offices. The city is also a significant industrial hub, including one of the world's largest zinc and nickel refineries. The Townsville area houses one of the country's biggest army bases, and it is the official home of Australia's 3rd and 11th Brigades. With a population of 180,820 people as of June 2018, Townsville is Australia's biggest city north of the Sunshine Coast.

History of Townsville Townsville was founded in 1864 and named after Robert Towns. In 1865, it was gazetted as a town and functioned as a commercial hub for the Pacific Islands. It was established as a municipality in 1866 and then as a city in 1903. It boasts one of Queensland's best harbours, located near Flinders Passage across the Great Barrier Reef offshore. Townsville is home to the James Cook University of North Queensland.

It currently serves as the commercial hub of northern Queensland, handling beef cattle, sheep, sugar and other agricultural commodities. Townsville is home to a giant prawn and fishing fleet. The city has the 938-foot Castle Hill, which overlooks Magnetic Island and serves as a tourist hub for the Great Barrier Reef. The formerly peaceful seaside town has blended into a contemporary city with tropical islands, lush rainforests, and World Heritage-listed national parks.
