Toowoomba is a city in Queensland, Australia, located in the Toowoomba Region of the Darling Downs. It is 125 kilometres west of Queensland's central city, Brisbane, by road. Toowoomba is Australia's second most populated inland city, behind Canberra, the biggest town on the Darling Downs. Toowoomba, a university and cathedral city, has retained most Victorian-era architecture and gardens, with over 150 public parks, including the famous Queens Park. Toowoomba has two airports: Toowoomba Wellcamp and Toowoomba City Aerodrome. The projected urban population of Toowoomba was 136,861 in June 2018, up 1.02% year on year during the previous five years.

History of Toowoomba Toowoomba was previously known as The Swamps, and its current name is from the Aboriginal word toowoom, which refers to a kind of local melon. Toowoomba's history dates back to the 19th century. From 1816 onwards, Europeans started exploring and settling in the region. The fertile plains surrounding Toowoomba were being utilised for agriculture by the end of the 1840s. Small commercial towns, schools, and churches grew as well. The city flourished in the 21st century, with new hospitals, industrial buildings, and educational institutions. In 2014, the Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport opened its doors. The city is well-planned, with numerous parks, and it has evolved into a centre for education.
