Port Headland is known as the 2nd largest town in the Pilbara region. South Hedland is its satellite town, situated around 18km away from Port Hedland. History of Port Hedland Peter Hedland, a Swedish mariner, was the first European who came to the region. He was the first person who noted the existence of the harbour and probably thought about its usage as a port. Peter had arrived in the region in April 1863. Over the years, many improvements and changes took place in the city. The Roads board carried out several improvements to the streets and roads in 1905. By 1947, more than 150 people were living in the region. This rose to 3000 people by 1968.
