A popular city in the Pilbara region, Karratha was established in 1968 mainly to accommodate the workforce involved in the region. The city got its name from the famous cattle station, which had the same name. The name is derived from the Aboriginal language, which means 'soft earth' or 'good country'. Karratha is located around 1.535 km away on the northern side of Perth.

Lying on the western side of Port Hedland, this picturesque city is separated from the sea by mangrove areas and tidal salt flats. As per June 2018 census, the urban population of Karratha was 16,708.
