Dr Peter Waddy

Dr Peter Waddy MBBS FRACP FCSANZ is an interventional cardiologist based in Findon, Adelaide, South Australia. With a special interest in complex coronary, adult congenital, and structural heart disease interventions, Dr Waddy joined SA Heart in 1998.

Dr Waddy obtained his medical degree from Adelaide University in 1988. He began his physician training at Flinders Medical Centre in 1989 and went on to pursue advanced cardiology training in 1991. In recognition of his expertise, he was awarded the Lion's Overseas Heart fellowship in 1995 and completed further advanced training at Oxford University.

In 1995, Dr Waddy was admitted as a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Building on his experience, he served as the Interventional Fellow at Flinders Medical Centre in 1996. The following year, he continued his career at Royal Perth Hospital before returning to Flinders in 1998 as a senior cardiology registrar.

During his time at Flinders Medical Centre, Dr Waddy pioneered programs for the percutaneous treatment of adult congenital heart disease in South Australia. His notable contributions include performing trans-catheter closures of atrial septal defects, patent foramena ovale, and patent ductus arteriosa. He also utilised stents to treat aortic coarctation. In addition, Dr Waddy introduced the first program of mitral balloon valvuloplasty for mitral stenosis in adult patients in South Australia and the Northern Territory.

Dr Waddy's expertise in coronary intervention led him to bring complex stenting techniques for bifurcation lesions to South Australia, thereby expanding the range of patients suitable for percutaneous revascularization. Following his stint at Flinders, he served as a staff specialist for two years before becoming a consultant at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. He also holds a public appointment at the Repatriation General Hospital.
