Dr Michaella Smith is a highly experienced and qualified general surgeon based in Bowral, New South Wales. With an extensive educational background, Dr Smith completed her medical degree at Sydney University with Honours in 2001, before undertaking a residency at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and general surgical training at RPA, Concord and Liverpool Hospitals. She also spent time training in plastic surgery at The Canberra Hospital, developing a broad experience in all aspects of the specialty of General Surgery. An active researcher, Dr Smith holds a Bachelor of Science, a Master's degree in Clinical Epidemiology, and a Doctor of Philosophy. As a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Surgery at the University of Wollongong, Dr Smith's research interests focus on improving outcomes after surgery, particularly for those living in rural areas. This research has seen her speak at numerous national and international meetings on assessing outcomes and quality of life after surgery, sentinel node biopsy, reconstructive techniques, and other aspects of general surgery and rural health. Dr Smith is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and a member of General Surgeons Australia, as well as the Academic Surgery, Surgical Oncology, and Rural Surgery sections of the college. She is also accredited to perform both endoscopy and colonoscopy and offers a specialist service for the treatment of a range of general surgical conditions in addition to other minor procedures. Outside of her professional career, Dr Smith is a mother of six boys and has been a resident of the Southern Highlands since 2006.
