Dr Michael Hammerton is an Ophthalmologist based in Glenelg, South Australia, Australia. He obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of Adelaide in 1978. He also holds fellowships from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (1984) and the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.

After completing his training, Dr Hammerton further advanced his skills with additional training in London at the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, and Moorfields Eye Hospital. During this time, he served as a Lecturer and Research Fellow at the Institute of Child Health at the University of London and as a Senior Registrar at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Returning to Adelaide, Dr Hammerton joined his current private practice, where he has been practicing general ophthalmology for over 30 years. His areas of expertise include cataract surgery, glaucoma management, treatment of diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, medical laser treatments, paediatrics, strabismus, eyelid surgery, and craniofacial ophthalmology.

Throughout his career, Dr Hammerton has been involved in teaching and examining at both pre and postgraduate levels. He has served as a lecturer in the Post Graduate Diploma of Child Health course at the University of Adelaide and as an examiner in physiology at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. He also tutors craniofacial fellows annually.

Dr Hammerton has contributed to the academic field with numerous published papers on various eye conditions. His research includes studies on the effects of anaesthetic agents on intraocular pressure, the relationship between skin conditions and the eye, eye conditions associated with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and craniofacial disorders, the causes of blindness in South East Asian countries, and management of ocular burns. He has also conducted research on the infant corneal endothelium and electro-diagnostic assessment of visual acuity, as well as the development of enzyme replacement for children with mucopolysaccharidosis.

In addition to his medical practice, Dr Hammerton has been actively involved in various organizations and committees. He served as Chairman of the Qualification and Education Committee for the South Australian branch of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and as the Secretary of the South Australian branch. He was a founding member of the Board of the South Australian Save Sight Foundation and Sight for All, contributing to sight-saving projects in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Dr Hammerton also provides services to Australia's Indigenous Health Program.

Dr Hammerton operates at Calvary North Adelaide and Glenelg Community Hospital and consults at both North Adelaide and Glenelg. His commitment to his patients' eye health and his extensive experience make him one of the most experienced craniofacial ophthalmologists in Australia.
