Dr Michael Chao

Dr Michael Chao is a very experienced Radiation Oncologist specialising in the treatment of breast, lung, and prostate cancers. With over 22 years of experience in the field, Dr Chao has emerged as a true pioneer in prostate brachytherapy, having completed over 1,000 prostate cancer implants and 800 rectal spacer procedures.

Dr Chao's expertise also extends to preoperative radiotherapy for locally advanced breast cancers, particularly prior to breast reconstruction, as well as innovative partial breast treatments for early-stage disease. He is committed to providing innovative and effective treatment options for his patients.

Dr Chao received his MBBS with honors from Monash University in 1991. He went on to complete his Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (FRANZCR) in 1999. His passion for research led him to become an NHMRC Scholar and Sir Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop Research Fellow. He has since completed his doctorate with the University of Melbourne. Dr Chao's strong commitment to research is demonstrated by his supervision of PhD and MPhil students and his impressive publication record, which includes over 90 publications.

Currently, Dr Chao serves as a radiation oncologist at Genesis Care Victoria, where he has been a valued member of the team since 2000. He consults at the Ringwood and Frankston Genesis Care Radiation Oncology Centres. In addition, he holds the position of honorary radiation oncologist at Maroondah Hospital (Eastern Health) and serves as a Visiting Medical Officer at the Olivia Newton John Cancer and Wellness Centre, where he is the lead oncologist for breast cancer. Dr Chao's contributions in these roles have been instrumental in providing exceptional care to his patients.

Dr Chao's extensive knowledge and experience have made a significant impact on the field of radiation oncology. His commitment to delivering outstanding patient care and advancing research ensures that his work continues to positively influence the lives of countless individuals affected by cancer. Fluent in Chinese (Cantonese) aside from English, Dr Chao is able to provide care to a diverse set of patients.
