Dr Malcolm Barlow

Dr Malcolm Barlow is a highly skilled cardiologist specialising in electrophysiology, performing ablations for cardiac arrhythmias and device implantation and follow-up. He completed his medical education from the University of Melbourne after attending secondary school in Melbourne and worked as a specialist physician in general medicine at various hospitals, including Box Hill Hospital, St. Vincent's Hospital, and the Austin and Repatriation General Hospitals. After gaining experience, he pursued his interest in cardiology and completed his training in this specialty at the Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide.

Dr Barlow's sub-specialty training in cardiac electrophysiology and pacing took him to Canada, where he spent three and a half years working at high-volume specialist training centers, including St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver and the London Health Sciences Unit in Ontario. During his training, Dr Barlow was the primary proceduralist in over 600 electrophysiological and over 300 pacing procedures, making him an expert in ablation and device implantation procedures.

Since returning to Australia in 2000, Dr Barlow has been working as a full-time staff specialist and Director of Electrophysiology and Pacing at John Hunter Hospital. He is also a conjoint senior lecturer at the University of Newcastle. He is one of the first Australian physicians performing ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF) and has remained up-to-date by traveling as required to leading EP centers. Dr Barlow is also a pioneer in cryoablation and remains one of the most experienced operators in cryoballoon ablation for AF in Australia.

Apart from AF ablation, Dr Barlow is also experienced in electrophysiological procedures for other indications, including supraventricular tachycardia, atrial flutter, atrial tachycardia, ventricular tachycardia, and pediatric catheter ablation for supraventricular tachycardias and Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. He is also experienced in implanting pacemakers, defibrillators, biventricular devices, and subcutaneous defibrillators for specific indications.

Aside from his work at John Hunter Hospital, Dr Barlow has been practicing privately since 2002, with offices located in Croudace House in New Lambton Heights. With over two decades of experience in electrophysiology and pacing, Dr Barlow is a highly skilled and experienced cardiologist dedicated to providing his patients with quality care and treatment.
