Dr Joseph Torresi

Associate Professor Joseph Torresi is a leading infectious diseases physician who currently works at Austin Health and is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Melbourne. He is also a NHMRC Practitioner Fellow and a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Dr. Torresi has extensive experience and knowledge in infectious diseases, especially in monitoring and preventing infectious diseases in travellers, including administering yellow fever vaccinations. He is co-director of the Melbourne GeoSentinel Surveillance network site, which monitors travel-related illnesses globally, and is the head of Travel Medicine at Eastern Infectious Diseases and Travel Medicine in Boronia. Dr. Torresi is also the current Chair of the ISTM Publications Committee and a former chair of the Viral Hepatitis SIG of the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Torresi is a renowned researcher in the field of infectious diseases with a particular interest in hepatitis, and he has published over 130 publications including original papers, reviews, book chapters, and peer-reviewed conference proceedings. He is also the head of the Hepatitis Research Laboratory and has attracted funding from NHMRC, ARC, and ACH2 for his HCV vaccine research. Dr. Torresi has served as a member of several scientific committees including those of CISTM8, CISTM9, and CISTM10, and he was associate chair of CISTM10, Chair of the 4th Regional ISTM, (APICTM 2008), and Co-chair of the 7th Australasian Viral Hepatitis Conference in 2010.

Dr. Torresi's areas of expertise include antimicrobial stewardship, tuberculosis, general infectious diseases, HIV, and infections in immunocompromised hosts. He has hospital appointments at Peninsula Private Hospital, Beleura Private Hospital, and Austin Health. Dr. Torresi is a frequently invited speaker to national and international conferences, making him a respected authority in the field of infectious diseases.
