A/Prof John O'Sullivan is a highly qualified and experienced cardiologist specialising in heart failure, particularly "stiff" heart failure or HFpEF, which is the most common form of heart failure worldwide. He is a Level III SCMR certified cardiac MRI specialist and utilises this technology to enhance the diagnosis and management of HFpEF. A/Prof O'Sullivan's primary focus is on managing the underlying conditions that contribute to this type of heart failure, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity, in order to improve patient outcomes.

In addition to his clinical practice, A/Prof O'Sullivan leads a research program at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, the Heart Research Institute, and the University of Sydney, where he works towards developing new diagnostic and treatment solutions in the field of HFpEF.

A/Prof O'Sullivan completed his medical training at the National University of Ireland, Galway, and obtained his FRCPI in 2006. Following his cardiology rotations at Dublin's National Cardiac Centre, Mater Misericordiae Hospital, he pursued further training in the United States at the Massachusetts General Hospital from 2012 to 2016. This renowned teaching hospital, affiliated with Harvard Medical School, provided A/Prof O'Sullivan with the opportunity to complete his postdoctoral research program in functional genomics and metabolic disease, earning him recognition from prestigious medical associations.

After relocating to Australia, A/Prof O'Sullivan underwent specialised training in cardiac imaging at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. In 2018, he became a Clinical-Academic Cardiologist at both the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the University of Sydney. During this time, he was awarded the Chapman Fellowship from Sydney Medical School, and he also held the position of Adjunct Professor at TU Dresden, Germany, which is one of the top 10 medical schools in the country.

A/Prof O'Sullivan's clinical and research interests revolve around heart failure, heart failure with persevered ejection fraction, diabetic cardiomyopathy, and cardiac MRI. Together with Dr Sean Lal, he operates a specialised HFpEF clinic at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. His research endeavors to advance new methods of diagnosis and treatment in this area and are supported by a National Heart Foundation Future Leadership Fellowship and grants from the NSW Office of Health and Medical Research.

Dedicated to the dissemination of knowledge, A/Prof O'Sullivan frequently delivers lectures at national and international conferences. He has also published his innovative research findings in esteemed journals such as Nature Communications and Eur J Heart Failure, as well as other experimental medicine and cardiology publications.

A/Prof O'Sullivan provides care to patients in both private practice at Strathfield Private Hospital and public practice at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
