Prof Murrell's interests lie in the field of orthopaedic surgery, specifically focusing on elbow and shoulder issues. He is particularly skilled in performing arthroscopic/keyhole shoulder surgery and developing innovative methods to treat rotator cuff tendon tears and conditions such as frozen shoulder/adhesive capsulitis, shoulder dislocations, acromio-clavicular dislocations, shoulder arthritis, cuff tear arthropathy, and calcific tendonitis. His expertise also extends to rotator cuff repair, stabilisation, capsular release, shoulder arthroplasty, shoulder replacement, reverse total shoulder replacement, and distal biceps reattachment.
Prof Murrell has received numerous awards and recognition throughout his career for his contributions to the field. He has been honored as a Distinguished Collegian by St Mark's College, University of Adelaide in 2020 and received the Publication of the Year award at St George and Sutherland Hospitals Clinical School, University of New South Wales in 2019. In 2018, he was the Gentchos Lecturer in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. He has also been a finalist for various esteemed awards such as the Charles S. Neer Award from the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons.
