Dr Bronte Ayres

Dr Bronte Ayres, MBBS FRACP, is an experienced cardiologist based in Adelaide, South Australia. With a career spanning several decades, Dr Ayres has established himself as an esteemed specialist in the field, particularly in the areas of echocardiography, transoesophageal echocardiography, arrhythmia management, and perioperative cardiac care.

Dr Ayres completed his medical degree at Adelaide University in 1971, where he achieved an impressive third-place ranking in his final year. Following graduation, he pursued postgraduate studies at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in 1972, before embarking on advanced cardiac training in 1975. In recognition of his potential and dedication, Dr Ayres was awarded the National Heart Foundation overseas travel grant, which allowed him to further enhance his skills at the University of Illinois, Chicago, USA, in 1977 and 1978. It was during this time that he completed his advanced training and was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 1978.

Upon his return to Adelaide, Dr Ayres focused on private practice, where he has been an integral part of SA Heart since its establishment in 1984. Throughout his career, Dr Ayres has also held senior visiting cardiologist positions at prominent hospitals such as Flinders Medical Centre and the Repatriation General Hospital. Notably, he played a pivotal role in introducing transoesophageal echo in Australia and dedicated 20 years to the field of intra-cardiac electrophysiology at Flinders Medical Centre. More recently, he has shifted his focus towards perioperative care for cardiac surgery at Ashford and intra-operative transoesophageal echo. Dr Ayres has also contributed significantly to medical education, having tutored medical students at Flinders Medical Centre for the past three decades.

Dr Bronte Ayres has held various leadership positions within the medical community, including State Chairman of the College of Physicians and Chief Barker of Variety, a prominent children's charity in South Australia. Additionally, he served as Chairman of the Board at SA Heart from 2008 to 2010.

In his current practice, Dr Ayres consults regularly at Ashford, Norwood, and Flinders rooms, as well as clinics located in Glenelg and Victor Harbor. With a comprehensive understanding of adult cardiology, he welcomes patients with a wide range of cardiac concerns.

Beyond his professional commitments, Dr Ayres's personal interests extend to his previous involvement in the wine industry. He cultivated a vineyard in Lobethal, situated in the picturesque Adelaide Hills, where he nurtured Merlot grapes as a testament to his passion for viticulture.
