With over three decades of experience in Cardiothoracic surgery, Professor Adam El-Gamel has made significant contributions to the field. He received his training in surgery and cardiac surgery from prestigious institutions such as the Hammersmith Hospital London, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, and Manchester Royal Infirmary Manchester. To further hone his skills, he undertook a lecturing and Winchester fellowship at Yale University in the US.
Since 2010, Prof El-Gamel has served as the Chief of Cardiothoracic surgery at Waikato District Health Board Hamilton NZ. During his tenure, he has also held academic appointments as an Associate Professor at Auckland University and the Chair of Cardiothoracic surgery at Waikato University. As an expert in his field, he was tasked with leading the NZ Cardiac Network for the Ministry of Health until 2018 and was appointed as the NZ representative for ANZSCT from 2015 to 2018. He also served as a practice assessor for the NZ Medical Council.
Before moving to NZ in 2009, Prof El-Gamel worked as a consultant cardiac surgeon and director of minimally invasive valve surgery at King's College Hospital in London. He also held a senior lecturer position at the University and became a Royal College Examiner for the Cardiothoracic surgery board.
Despite his vast experience as a cardiac surgeon, Prof El-Gamel's passion for the field remains undiminished. He enjoys complex and challenging surgeries and relishes interacting with patients and their families.
