He later established his radiation oncology career at Westmead Hospital, where he served as the founding director of the Western Breast Screening Unit and the Westmead Breast Cancer Institute. In 2011, Prof Boyages assumed the position of the director of the cancer program at Macquarie University. He was instrumental in setting up the Australian Lymphoedema Education Research and Treatment (ALERT) program and continues to serve as an honorary consultant. Prof John Boyages joined Icon Cancer Centre in August 2019, where he collaborates with radiation therapist Lesley Baker to deliver innovative treatments for breast cancer patients. Together, they have developed and published on the use of Volumetric Arc Radiation Therapy (VMAT) techniques for breast cancer treatment. Their goal is to optimize cancer control while minimizing side effects and ensuring personalized care for each patient. With a focus on patient-centered care, Prof Boyages and the Icon team provide comprehensive information on various aspects of breast cancer treatment, including nutrition, exercise, prevention and early detection of lymphoedema, body image, sexuality, follow-up care, and psychological support. Prof Boyages is a prolific author with over 180 clinical research articles published in leading publications, primarily revolving around breast cancer and lymphoedema. He has also authored three books on breast cancer and related topics for patients. His expertise is recognized in the medical community, and he is frequently invited to peer review articles on breast cancer and lymphoedema. Prof Boyages has received numerous accolades for his significant contributions to medicine, including being awarded an Order of Australia (AM) in January 2017.
