Dr Viraj Kariyawasam

Dr Viraj Kariyawasam is a vastly experienced Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist, specialising in the field of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). He is currently the Head of Inflammatory Bowel Disease Service at Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospital. Dr Kariyawasam operates his practice in Rouse Hill, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, with Norwest Private Hospital being his associated hospital.

Dr Kariyawasam obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka in 2003. He subsequently migrated to Australia and completed his gastroenterology training in Sydney. Dr Kariyawasam furthered his professional development by pursuing an IBD fellowship at Guys' and St Thomas Hospital in London in 2012.

With his extensive training and experience, Dr Kariyawasam specialises in various areas within gastroenterology and hepatology. His special interests include inflammatory bowel disease, functional GI disorders, bowel cancer screening, and advanced therapeutic endoscopy (gastroscopy, colonoscopy, and endoscopic ultrasound). He has completed additional qualifications, including a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Sydney in 2019. His research for his PhD focused on the role of immunomodulators in the management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, specifically evaluating the effectiveness of Thiopurines.

Dr Kariyawasam places a strong emphasis on providing personalized and accessible patient care.
