Dr. Sean Cheng is an accomplished Ophthalmologist with expertise in both medical and surgical diseases of the retina. As the Principal Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon at Queensland Eye & Retina Specialists, he specialises in treating conditions such as retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, retinal vascular disease, complex cataracts and diabetic eye disease. Dr. Cheng also provides comprehensive eye care services, including cataracts, general ophthalmology, and ocular trauma.

Dr. Cheng was born and raised in Brisbane, Queensland, and completed his education in the same city. Prior to pursuing his medical career, he achieved First Class Honours in Engineering at the University of Queensland. He then went on to study Medicine at the University of Queensland, obtaining his Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree in 2004.

After completing his medical training, Dr. Cheng undertook specialist ophthalmology training in Queensland. Additionally, he served as the Senior Registrar at Princess Alexandra Hospital and Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital, where he received comprehensive training in cornea, cataract, oculoplastics, and general ophthalmology.

To further enhance his skills and knowledge, Dr. Cheng was awarded the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) Topham Scholarship. This prestigious scholarship allowed him to pursue two years of surgical sub-specialisation through a Vitreoretinal Fellowship. Under the guidance of Professor Andrew Dick and Dr. Richard Haynes, he honed his surgical skills at the renowned Bristol Eye Hospital and the West of England Eye Unit at Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital in the United Kingdom.

Currently, Dr. Cheng serves as a Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon at both Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital with Queensland Health. He is also a Senior Lecturer with the University of Queensland School of Medicine, where he is committed to training and mentoring the next generation of doctors, eye surgeons, and ophthalmic allied health professionals in Queensland.

With his extensive experience and expertise, Dr. Cheng is dedicated to providing high-quality eye care services to his patients. He continues to stay at the forefront of advancements in ophthalmology, ensuring that his patients receive the most up-to-date and effective treatments available.
