Dr Dushan Alponsu is a highly regarded consultant psychiatrist with a special interest in treating primary and secondary psychiatric illnesses related to work. He has a wealth of experience in using psychological therapies, medications, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), and Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) to treat mental illnesses.
Dr Alponsu completed his undergraduate training in 1998 and postgraduate training in Psychiatry in 2007 in Sri Lanka. In 2009, he enrolled in the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists fellowship training program and received his training in Royal Adelaide, Glenside, and Modbury Hospitals in South Australia. He became a Fellow of Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists in 2011.
Dr Alponsu is also an International Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of Ceylon College of Physicians. His expertise extends to psychiatric impairment assessment and is certified by the General and Medical Impairment Ratings Specialist Medical College based on AMA 5 (GEPI) in Queensland, and AMA 4 (GEPIC) in Victoria. He is also an accredited Independent Medical Examiner (IME) on IME Panel of Work Cover Queensland.
Given his prestigious qualifications and experience, Dr Alponsu only has limited capacity to accept new referrals, with a focus on primary and secondary psychiatric illnesses related to work. He also provides medico-legal assessments and work capacity assessment for clinical conditions relating to work and injuries. Dr Alponsu is affiliated with Ramsay Clinic Caloundra. He bulk-bills medical students and is a workcover provider. He offers services such as insurance opinions/reports, opinion and report (MBS item 291), shared care, and work capacity assessment. He can provide specialised care for adults aged 18-60 dealing with ADHD, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, schizophrenia, and supportive psychotherapy. Dr Alponsu has experience working with diverse groups including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, doctors, psychiatrists, or medical students, Maori individuals, military and veterans, and non-English speaking individuals.
