Dr. Rachel Blackshaw is a highly qualified and experienced Orthopaedic Consultant with expertise in upper limb surgery, complex fracture management, and peripheral nerve surgery. Her passion for medicine started when she obtained a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Monash University with a 1st class honours in 2005 before completing her MBBS degree at The University of Melbourne in 2006. Rachel's passion for Orthopaedic surgery led to her completing her AOA/RACS Fellowship exam in 2018, becoming a consultant in 2019.
Dr. Blackshaw's practice philosophy revolves around restoring function and minimizing pain for patients with upper limb injuries. She believes that every patient deserves personalized care, specialized attention, and education regarding their specific conditions. Having trained in Australia and the UK, Rachel has honed her skills with many specialist courses in sub-specialty areas such as microsurgery, arthroscopy, and hand surgery, among others.
Rachel has held various positions, including a 12-month consultant role at Austin Hospital, where she developed her general trauma and elective upper limb skills. Her advanced training in upper limb surgery continued with Melbourne Orthopaedic Group (MOG) in 2020, where she completed a six-month fellowship program. Rachel then traveled to the United Kingdom and spent eighteen months focused on hand surgery and peripheral nerve conditions at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEHB) and Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (ROH). She also served as an Honorary Fellow at the Birmingham Children's Hospital (BCH) for twelve months.
Currently, Rachel holds a public appointment with Eastern Health at Box Hill & Maroondah Hospitals. She is committed to providing her patients with accurate diagnoses, effective treatments, and long-term care to help them regain function and reduce pain. Her understanding of how the human hand functions, as well as the impact that injuries can have on someone's daily life, makes her an ideal choice for patients of all ages who require upper limb care.
