A/Prof John Amerena

A/Prof John Amerena is a distinguished Cardiologist based in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. With decades of experience in the field, he has established himself as a leading expert in the management of various cardiovascular conditions.

Dr Amerena obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Melbourne in 1981. He subsequently embarked on further training and education, spending four years in the United States at the prestigious University of Michigan. During this time, he focused on the fields of hypertension and hyperlipidaemia, gaining valuable expertise in these areas.

Returning to Australia, Dr Amerena currently serves as a Cardiologist at University Hospital - Geelong. He is also associated with Deakin University in the School of Medicine and the Department of Epidemiology and Preventative Medicine at Monash University. Moreover, he holds the position of Director of the Geelong Cardiology Research Unit, which actively participates in numerous phase II to III clinical trials.

While he continues to be engaged in hypertension research, Dr Amerena's interests have expanded to include atherothrombosis, particularly with regard to antithrombotic and antiplatelet therapies, with a focus on atrial fibrillation. Additionally, he has a strong passion for heart failure and serves as the Director of the Heart Failure Programme at University Hospital - Geelong.
