Dr Iniyaval Thevathasan

Dr Iniyaval Thevathasan, also known as Ini, is a maternal fetal medicine specialist based in Melbourne. She has extensive experience in complex and high-risk pregnancy care, partnering with a multidisciplinary team to care for women with medical disorders during pregnancy and in the diagnosis and management of fetal anomalies. Dr Thevathasan is currently holding public appointments at The Royal Women’s Hospital in Parkville and the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Melbourne.

With a particular interest in the impact of inflammatory bowel disease on pregnancy, Dr Thevathasan has an honorary position at the pregnancy inflammatory bowel disease clinic at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Alongside caring for women experiencing recurrent pregnancy loss, she also provides a pre-pregnancy counselling service and is involved in the prevention of pre-term birth and care for women with multiple pregnancies. Additionally, she performs tertiary level obstetrics and gynaecology ultrasound.

Dr Thevathasan is a champion of inclusive and patient-centered healthcare, ensuring women are fully informed to make decisions about their pregnancy based on evidence-based medical practices. She is passionate about teaching and training medical students, junior medical staff, and midwives, and is actively involved in training regimes at The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital, and The Royal Women’s Hospital.

In her research studies, Dr Thevathasan is interested in the impact of antenatal corticosteroids on women, especially those with pre-existing diabetes. Fluent in Tamil, she provides care to patients in this language.

Outside of her professional work, Dr Thevathasan enjoys reading, travelling, trying out new recipes, and spending quality time with her dog, Scout.
