Prof Gerald Fogarty

Prof Gerald Fogarty is an experienced radiation oncologist specialising in the treatment of skin cancer and melanoma. He is currently practicing at Icon Cancer Centre sites in Revesby, Gosford, and Wahroonga in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Prof Fogarty completed his Bachelor of Science (BSc) and Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) with Honours at the University of New South Wales in 1983. He underwent radiation oncology training at Geelong Hospital and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, where he gained extensive experience in the management and treatment of skin cancer and melanoma. In 2003, he became a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (FRANZCR). In 2013, he completed a PhD at the University of Technology Sydney, focusing on the advances in radiation therapy for skin cancer treatment.

With over 15 years of experience in the field, Prof Fogarty has held various senior radiation oncology positions, including Site Director and Senior Consultant Radiation Oncologist at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney, Mater Hospital, Macquarie University Hospital, Skin & Cancer Foundation, and Melanoma Institute of Australia. He also served as the Site Director and Senior Consultant Radiation Oncologist at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney from 2016 to 2021.

Prof Fogarty is dedicated to advancing cancer therapies, particularly in skin cancer, and aims to establish a level one evidence base for these therapies to achieve optimal treatment outcomes for patients. He actively engages in clinical research and education, mentoring emerging medical professionals. He holds academic appointments at the University of Technology Sydney, University of Sydney, University of Notre Dame, and Macquarie University Hospital. Additionally, Prof Fogarty is a regular invited speaker at national and international conferences. He has authored over 180 publications, including the radiation therapy section of the 2019 NHMRC Management of Keratinocyte Guidelines.

Prof Fogarty remains at the forefront of new technologies in radiation therapy treatment. He specialises in the use of stereotactic radiation therapy, volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), and external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) techniques. His clinical expertise covers a wide range of solid tumour malignancies, with a focus on melanoma, skin cancer, and benign skin conditions that can be treated with radiation therapy.
