Mr Dermot Collopy

Mr Dermot Collopy is an Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in hip, knee, and trauma-fracture surgeries. He is based in Subiaco, 6008, Perth. Dermot graduated from the University of Western Australia (UWA) in 1986 and obtained his MBBS degree. He went on to complete an internship and residency at Royal Perth Hospital, where he gained valuable experience in a Level 1 Trauma Unit.

After being selected for advanced orthopaedics training, Mr Collopy earned his FRACS from the Royal Australian College of Surgeons in Sydney in 1995. Seeking further expertise, he pursued sub-specialty fellowship training overseas. Dermot spent three years at the prestigious Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, UK, focusing on adult reconstruction. Following this, he gained experience at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, concentrating on hip and knee replacement. He then specialized in pelvic and acetabular trauma at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas.

Returning to Perth in 1997, Dermot joined the illustrious team at Royal Perth Hospital as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon. His primary areas of practice include hip and knee replacement as well as orthopaedic trauma. In addition to his clinical work, Mr Collopy is actively involved in teaching orthopaedic registrars and trainees. His expertise has attracted many international fellows who have sought to learn from him.

Research is an integral part of Dermot's work, with a particular interest in implant design and development, as well as the fixation surfaces of uncemented implants. He has contributed to the design of notable systems such as the Emperion Hip system, the Triathlon Knee system, and the Accolade II Hip system.

Recognized for his expertise both nationally and internationally, Dermot is frequently invited to speak at various meetings and conferences. He served as the immediate past-president of the Arthroplasty Society of Australia and currently holds the position of State Chairman of the Western Australia branch of the Australian Orthopaedic Association. He actively participates in national committees and is a member of the Australian National Joint Replacement Registry.

In his busy private practice, Mr Collopy's focus is on hip and knee replacement, revision surgery, and arthroscopic knee surgery. He has recently expanded his skills to include robotic-assisted knee replacement and is among the pioneering surgeons in Australia trained in this technique.
