As the Head of the Department of General Surgical Specialties and Director of the Upper GI Tumour Stream at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Royal Women's Hospital, Ben is a highly respected Clinical Professor at The University of Melbourne. He is also an examiner in General Surgery for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and is slated to hold the Chair-Elect for the Conjoint Committee for Recognition of Training in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (CCRTGE). With medical qualifications from Melbourne University, Ben obtained his fellowship in 2001 after which he pursued advanced training in Hepatopancreaticobiliary surgery at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne and The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. In 2013, he finished his Doctor of Medical Science degree from The University of Melbourne, having authored and published numerous research papers that are highly cited around the world.
As an expert in his field, Ben is a sought-after speaker and a published author, and has a special interest in patient care, taking a compassionate approach that prioritises the best possible outcomes. Apart from his academic and research credentials, he also serves in public hospitals at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and has a private practice for his patients. Additionally, Ben has received the Humanitarian Overseas Service Medal in October 2014 for his dedicated service in Samoa, and a Certificate of Outstanding Service from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in May 2014.
