Dr Athula Gunasekara

Dr Athula Gunasekara is an established Interventional Cardiologist based in Bella Vista, Sydney, Australia. He specialises in Adult General Cardiology, with a particular focus on Complex Coronary and Structural Intervention and novel therapies for Atrial Fibrillation.

Dr Gunasekara holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from the University of Queensland, which he completed in 1997. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (FCSANZ). He is also a member of the American College of Cardiology.

After completing his general cardiology training at Westmead Hospital in Sydney, Dr Gunasekara further honed his skills in Interventional Cardiology, endovascular procedures, and structural heart disease at the renowned Mount Sinai Cardiovascular Institute in New York, USA. There, he trained under the guidance of Dr Samin Sharma, a world-renowned Interventional Cardiologist.

With his expertise in opening chronically occluded coronary arteries (CTO) using innovative techniques, Dr Gunasekara has successfully treated complex and calcific coronary artery lesions. He is experienced in utilizing various devices and methods to achieve optimal outcomes for his patients. His extensive knowledge and skills include the use of rotational atherectomy/cutting balloons and intra-vascular ultrasound to facilitate coronary intervention.

Beyond his clinical practice, Dr Gunasekara actively engages in ongoing medical education and research to remain at the forefront of cardiovascular medicine. He maintains his professional affiliations with The Royal Australasian College of Physicians, The Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand, and the American College of Cardiology.
