Dr. Ashutosh Hardikar, a renowned Cardiothoracic Surgeon, holds the position of Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Staff Specialist at the Royal Hobart Hospital. His core areas of interest include aortic surgery, adult congenital surgery, bicuspid aortic valves, and thoracic surgical work. Dr. Hardikar earned his degree in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery from India and worked as a lecturer in Mumbai before coming to Adelaide as a Fellow in CT surgery for three years. He then went back to India and established a unit at Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune, where he worked until 2008. In March 2008, he moved to Hobart and has been leading the unit there since 2015. He also helped set up another unit at Calvary Hospitals, Lenah Valley Campus.
Apart from his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Hardikar is currently pursuing his Ph.D. under Professor Thomas Marwick's supervision at the University of Tasmania and Menzies Research Institute, where he is studying bicuspid aortic valves and associated aortic pathology. He established the Tasmanian registry of bicuspid aortic valves and aortic pathology and is responsible for its data collection and maintenance. The registry is an essential part of BAV-CON, a consortium of worldwide registries.
Dr. Hardikar is an active member of the cardiothoracic community and continues to enhance his clinical skills through various workshops and training. He has attended several workshops, such as minimally invasive MIDCAB surgery workshop in Mumbai, VATS training course in New Delhi, minimally invasive mitral surgery workshop in Leipzig, and Uniportal VATS workshop and training in Shanghai. He also works as a reviewer for The Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery, Heart, Lung and Circulation, and Heart: BMJ Publications. Since 2009, Dr. Hardikar has worked as an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Tasmania.
